In New Zealand, it is the second official week of winter, however, today felt like a mid-summers day. Abandoning my winter woollies for a T-shirt and trainers, Poppy and I set out this morning for a long walk along the coast. Two hours later I found myself back at home and hopped on the computer to find something nice to share with you, quickly discovering this cute fisherman's cottage, it seemed appropriate on such a lovely day.
Shelter Island comprises of 8,000 acres nestled between the North and South forks of Long Island and you can reach the island with a quick ferry trip from Greenport, NY. Nearly a third of the island is a nature reserve, the rest is home to its small population of just over 2,300 people and almost the same number of dwellings. The island is a mix of permanent residences and holiday homes and this beautifully renovated fisherman's cottage complete with pool and pool house is just one of its inhabitants.
Renovation of the cottage was undertaken by SchappacherWhite DPC, whose clients include NY's, Hells Kitchen. Being both an architectural and interior design firm they were the perfect solution for the restoration and interior design of this original fishermans cottage. Rhea White oversees the interior design, Janelle McCulloch, A Library of Design, describes her as "a woman who can style a house like no one - and I mean NO ONE - I've ever met!". Clearly Rhea has a creative style that neither over, or underwhelms this lovely home. Timeless in appeal, she has kept the palette simple in black and white. Furniture is uncluttered and a mix of traditional designs and the occasional contemporary piece such as the cube side tables in the living room which draw their lines from the striped black and white rug.
