Small Space Dining

Sorry for the few weeks silence, over Easter I was away for a week and since returning I have thrown myself into my art, hence this overdue post. Generally, I post images of homes with large dining rooms, however not everyone has the opportunity of a luxurious dining space, so, if your looking to down size or need some space saving ideas, then read on.

Before you think about planning or shopping for a small dining space, you need to think about your style, size of the space, adjoining rooms and existing furnishing. Small space dining means having to re think that large, long, refectory table for possibly, an oak drop leaf or an extension table. Alternatively, round dining tables are perfect for small areas. Think also about the choice of chairs, keep things neat and tidy when it comes to chairs, simple chairs or for a classic look add some slip covers. Another great space saving idea is to use built in seating either incorporated into a nook or up against a wall, there are some great illustrations of this idea below. All these rooms have been professionally designed by interior designers that know how to create stylish, yet functional small dining spaces.

Above: If you are so tight on space that you have no room for a table, then splash out on a suitable island bench and put your money into comfortable, upholstered chairs. Design also by Bennett Lerner Interiors.

Above: Utilise a corner for dining. I love this combination of a rustic, contemporary table, with simple lines. The chair legs mimic the shape of the table but give contrasting texture. The wooden table brings warmth to the space. If the designers used something like a white, Tulip table here it would have felt cold in contrast.  Design by Ponciano Design

Above: If you have a narrow space, it can sometimes be better to place one end of your table against a wall such as illustrated here. If you do require extra seating then you can always pull the table away. It can be handy to have some folding chairs stored away for such times. Design by Kenorah Design

I hope you have gained some inspiration for small dining. I am actually thinking of a built in seat for my dining area as I am very limited in space, so watch this spot :)
